Our History

  • Founded on 18th February 2002

  • Brainchild of Pam Handley

  • Initially funded by £1,000 grant from Watford Borough Council

  • Moved to our current location at 25 Wharf Lane in 2003

  • Formally opened the doors of our shop in January 2004

Our Pillars

Pillar 1 - Helping Disadvantaged People

We aim to provide a warm and welcoming atmosphere where people are not made to feel disadvantaged. A place where people can come and look around, chat and feel welcome. Many local older people make very regular visits just to chat. 9 Lives wants all of our disadvantaged customers to have a sense of self worth through making their property into a warm and welcoming home.

 

Pillar 2 - Training People with Learning Difficulties or mild Mental Health Difficulties

We seek to help people with learning difficulties or mild mental ill health that are referred to us by Councils, other charities and through recommendations by offering them the opportunity to participate in an 8 week furniture restoration course. Mild mental ill health is defined as anxiety, depression, autism, or loneliness. Unfortunately, we are not qualified to train individuals with serious mental illness. Courses are offered free of charge and a certificate is provided upon completion.

 

Pillar 3 - Saving Furniture from Landfill

We collect pre-loved furniture from local residents in the Watford, Rickmansworth, Batchworth, Croxley and surrounding area to sell in our shop and upcycle where appropriate. We accept donated Furniture, Bric a Brac, Electricals, Books/CD’s/DVD’s and Fashion at the shop but we ask that only good quality/sellable items donated – “if you would not want it, do not donate it” . If items cannot be sold, they are sold for recycling.

We have a amazing group of permanent staff that keep the show room running smoothly.

Our Friendly Volunteers

We also have a group of friendly volunteers who help us every day with a whole range of tasks, such as:

  • Drivers mates to help with collection and delivery of items

  • Volunteers who help out in the shop and managing donations

  • Fashion volunteers who help us sort and display clothing, shoes, and accessories

  • Book volunteers who help us sort our book donations and post rare books online

  • Workshop volunteers that help us up-cycle and mend donated furniture in need of a lift

A number of our volunteers have learning difficulties or mild mental ill health. We also regularly have a number students working towards their Duke of Edinburgh's Bronze, Silver, or Gold Award helping out.
