Meet Jessica, our new tutor

At 9 Lives, we provide training and work experience for people who are recovering from mental health problems or who have a learning disability. And we're excited to announce that we have an amazing new tutor for our furniture restoration courses, Jessica Corlett.

How did we find her? Jessica found us! A friend told her about 9 Lives so she started visiting regularly. Jessica says she was ‘addicted, as I love a thrifty bargain!’. When she saw our job advert for a new tutor she was hugely attracted to it.

Why was that? With Jessica's experience, it was a great fit. But she also realised that this was a very important part of what 9 Lives offers. Not all customers realise that the profit we make through sales is used to subsidise these courses that are so beneficial to our students. And we also sell the upcycled furniture in our shop.

What is her background? Jessica’s CV is impressive. She graduated with a degree in Costume Design for Performing Arts, worked in TV for 10 years as an assistant director before becoming an events co-ordinator for four London care homes specialising in dementia whilst also running craft workshop events. A busy lady!

How are things going so far? Jessica has got her first course underway and is loving being part of the 9 Lives family which she describes as ‘fun, satisfying and with a lot of care’.  The pandemic has obviously affected many people’s mental health and she feels that part of her role is to help students regain their confidence socialising.

What does the future hold? Jessica is already thinking of new ideas and ways to use our workshop. One idea is to offer furniture upcycling courses to the general public. Another is to offer a course to children that focuses on the environmental benefits of repairing items rather than throwing them away. Watch this space!

Jessica trains students who are recovering from mental health problems or who have a learning disability to refurbish, paint and up-cycle furniture. The welcoming environment and friendly staff make it a great place to gain skills and confidence. So if you enjoy being practical and creative, then contact Jessica to register for our free course. We also offer work experience opportunities in our shop or helping with our van service in a supported capacity.

We have a lot of fun and make all our students feel at home, wanted and valued, giving them a way to help others and be part of the community. For more information please contact us on or phone us on 01923 718666.
